چکیده

Rober tson has advanced the concept tha t all l ipoprotein membranes in and a round cells have the characterist ic triple-layered 'uni t membrane s t ructure" (8 10). O the r authors have reported occasional exceptions. Thus Lillibridge (6) described a single-layered m e m b r a n e in pepsiniferous cells in h u m a n stomach, and Kar re r (4) has ment ioned certain vesicles in lung phagocytes as being surrounded by thin, single-layered membranes differing from those conforming to Robertson 's uni t m e m b r a n e structure. In two previous studies (11, 12), the plasma m e m b r a n e of Staphylococcus aureus was seen as a single-layered structure about 50 A thick, resembling the exceptions to the uni t m e m b r a n e structure ment ioned above. In the course of subsequent efforts, it has been possible to demonstrate a typical triple-layered uni t membrane in the case of S. aureus, using a special preparat ive technique. This demonst ra t ion suggests tha t the plasma m e m b r a n e of S. aureus may possess a true uni t membrane structure, par t of which may be masked when observed after the usual prepara t ive techniques for electron microscopy.

Bioactivity Determination of Recombinant lysostaphin Immobilized on Glass Surfaces Modified by Cold Atmospheric Plasma on Staphylococcus aureus

Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is a source of nosocomial infections and one of the significant concerns in patients with indwelling devices. Lysostaphin is a bacterially produced endopeptidase with a unique activity on S. aureus. Plasma, the fourth state of the material, consists of charged ions, free electrons, and activated neutral species. Biomedical applications of cold plasma are rapi...

Assessment of anti-bacterial activity of non-thermal plasma in sterilization of infectious wastes

In today's world, the production of hospital wastes and their adverse effects such as infectious outbreaks and resistance to treatment is an important issue. Therefore, it's vital to find a new and efficient method to manage such wastes. In this study, the ability of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to deactivate Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus bacter...

The Plasma Membrane of Staphylococcus Aureus

As electron microscopic techniques have improved, the fine structure of bacterial cells has come to be understood more clearly. There are, however, many details yet to be elucidated. I propose to report here some observations on the plasma membrane of Staphylococcus aureus, using sectioning techniques. Bradfield (1956) has already described some structural features of Staphylococcus aureus usin...

Effect of Zataria multiflora Boiss essential oil on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in the light salted fillets of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)

The effects of different concentrations of Zataria multiflora  essential oils at concentrations of 0, 0.005, 0.015, 0.045, 0.135, 0.405 and 0.810% on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus were studied in a food model system, light salted fillets of silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) at storage temperature of 10ºC for 21 days. The results showed that there was no significant difference in b...

Further Studies on the Plasma Membrane of Staphylococcus Aureus

Robertson has proposed the concept that all biological membranes have the same "uni t structure" (Robertson, 1957 and 1959; Moody and Robertson, 1960). In an early study (Suganuma, 1961), the plasma membrane of Staphylococcus aureus was seen as only a single line with an over-all thickness of about 50 A. However, in a later paper (Suganuma, 1964), it was reported that the plasma membrane of the...
